Accra is loosing its beauty it had due to the increasing number of street hawkers on the roads especially at the central part of the capital.
This is becoming increasingly unbearable each passing day since the number keeps increasing. The efforts by previous and present government to control this indisciplinary attitude has proved futile. The National Democratic Congress(NDC) during its period in power drove the hawkers out of the streets from time to time. This present government,NPP went a step further.
A new market which cost the government millions of cedis has been completed and commissioned for use yet these sellers have refused to go there because according to them there is poor patronage from the public. Most sellers I talked to had similar complains. They comlained of poor drainage at the new site.
It always got flooded when it rained making it impossible to move freely in the market, said a tomato seller. They also complained of the size of the market. The market is too small to contain all the three groups selling on the street. The General Secretary of the Petty Traders Association said unless all three groups could get into one market they will not move from the streets.
This problem is due to the increasing migration from the rural areas by young men and women seeking greaner pastures in the city. They have abandoned their villages and farms.
This problem can be solved if the government creats enough jobs in the rural areas for the people and also develope those areas to the standard of a capital.
